This question worries all gardeners! After all, everyone wants to have a lush flowering garden and a fruitful vitamin garden. Fortunately, our country has a temperate climate with mild winters, smoothly turning into warm springs. The soil is already warm by May. So, when calculating the date of sowing seeds for seedlings, we can use the universal formula, not taking into account sudden changes in temperature and vagaries of the weather — they are insignificant.

At the same time, each gardener should distinguish well between heat-loving and cold-resistant crops, know the timing of the ripening of vegetables, focus on the vegetative period of development of flowering plants, know the optimal age of seedlings before planting plants in open ground.

You need to know that cold-resistant crops include radishes, beets, carrots, turnips, daikon, parsnips. They quickly adapt to open ground, even if the seedlings are not strong enough.

Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, cabbage, eggplant, zucchini, zucchini, pumpkin, melon, celery, leafy salads are heat-loving. It is very important not to outgrow them. Accustomed to greenhouse conditions, seedlings will not be able to adapt to open ground, will weakly set fruits and produce a poor harvest. Therefore, we offer a hint plate for the most popular vegetables indicating the number of days from the moment the seeds germinate to the planting of seedlings on the site:

  • Early tomatoes — 45-50 days
  • Tomatoes medium and late — 60-75 days
  • Eggplant -50-60 days
  • Bulgarian pepper — 50-70 days
  • Cucumbers — 25-30 days
  • Broccoli, cauliflower — 45-50 days
  • White cabbage — 35-40 days
  • Melons — 25-30 days.

At this age, seedlings are not yet spoiled by greenhouse conditions and can easily adapt to the vagaries of the weather. It is distinguished by its strength, quickly forms ovaries and gives a rich and generous harvest.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to compile such a table for all plants — there are innumerable of them. Yes, and do not! Seed producers give valuable information on the packaging, which will help us calculate the optimal time for sowing seeds for seedlings. You just need to insert this data into the formula: it is not complicated at all.

Universal formula for calculating the date of sowing seeds

D \u003d A + B + C, where:
D is the sum of days from sowing seeds to planting seedlings in the ground.
A is the number of days from sowing the seeds until the emergence of seedlings.
B — the number of days from germination to picking seedlings.
C — the number of days before planting seedlings on the site.

For example, we know that tomato seeds germinate in 5-7 days. The formation of 2-3 full-fledged leaves in seedlings takes 15-20 days (dive time). The optimal age for planting in the ground is 45-50 days. If the soil in your area warms up in May, then seedlings should be sown in February.

Features of sowing ornamental and flowering plants

The seeds of most trees and shrubs have a hard shell that softens/cracks when exposed to cold. This process must be simulated artificially. In winter, it is convenient to do it right on the site. Sow the seeds in seedling containers and dig under a layer of snow. Just don’t forget to put a «flag» — otherwise you won’t remember where to look.

Second. Seedlings of many flowering plants require additional illumination with a phytolamp (you can use budgetary fluorescent ones, but the result will be slightly worse). A short daylight makes the seedlings reach for the sun — they stretch out, forming long internodes. In order for the seedling to form strong and healthy, the total daylight hours should be 10-12 hours. This is critical for gloxinia, begonias, eustoma and even garden bells. Light is important for all plants, and you can never go wrong with a phytolamp. Everyone will be happy with the light — from a modest daisy to a luxurious rose.

Third. Some seedlings require hardening for future flowering. Gazania, cyclamen, celosia, marigolds, petunia, zinnia, etc., after picking, are transferred to a cool place with a temperature of 14-16 °. Having passed the artificially created stress stage, they will be ready for the vagaries of the weather and will be able to bloom luxuriantly in the open air.

Write about your successes, share your secrets of arranging a flowering garden and a fruitful vegetable garden. And we just have to state the fact that gardeners, even with many years of experience, mostly use the methods of sowing and planting that their grandmothers used. And this is the main mistake, because agricultural technologies do not stand still and gardeners, even experienced ones, also need to learn new things. And our professionals will tell you how to select seeds in a new way.
