What types of cherries can be planted
Cherry, like many garden crops, is divided not only into varieties, but also into species. Some of them we don’t even know exist. Often the effectiveness of their cultivation depends on the combination of varieties on the site. Cross-pollination allows you to get a big harvest, and the berries become sweeter.
The famous Vladimir cherry is singled out as a separate type of hill. This is a tree with a beautiful crown and a high yield. Kuril ornamental cherry is distinguished by abundant pink flowering, similar to sakura, bird cherry is known to everyone as sweet cherry. There are not only fruit, but also decorative varieties.
Cherry varieties that are right for you
Cherry varieties can be divided into several groups according to certain characteristics. The most important criteria will be those that we have no control over. Winters will never get warmer, and groundwater always returns to the same level. It is these indicators that will be decisive. Let’s see what we can plant.
Another important indicator of flowering time. It is necessary to select varieties so that pollinating varieties bloom at the same time, they are usually indicated in the description of the variety or they can be found in our support service. Which variety of cherry to choose is up to you, but be sure to consider the main properties of each variety.
How to plant cherries
The main rule for planting cherries is to choose a bright area where the shadow from trees and buildings does not fall. For most varieties, the level of groundwater occurrence is considered to be closer than 1.5-2 meters. In other areas, you can grow any variety.
Chernozem areas with neutral soil are well suited for planting. On acidic soil, the plant loses winter hardiness, grows poorly. Therefore, at least 3 times per season, apply ash under the bushes at the rate of 250-500 grams per square meter of the circumferential circle, depending on the degree of acidity. Find out what kind of soil on your site will help indicator strips purchased at a garden store.
In a planting hole 60 * 60 cm in size and 50 cm deep, apply lowland peat and horse humus as an organic fertilizer, they do not acidify the soil. One plant needs 1-3 buckets, depending on the type of soil. On rich fertile soil, a minimum of organic matter is required, on sandy loam and heavy clay soils, a maximum. For proper nutrition of seedlings, add 1 tablespoon of superphosphate to each well.
After planting, water the bush well and mulch the surface with sawdust of deciduous crops, except for oak, or chopped straw. Monitor soil moisture constantly, especially during flowering and berry growth. With a lack of moisture, the fruits become small, sour, part of the ovary falls off.
Top dressing cherries
If optimal conditions are created during planting, the first three years of feeding can be abandoned. In the fourth year, start feeding cherries in early spring with nitrogen fertilizers, complex during flowering, and potash in August. Feeding 1 time in 2 years is enough.
Sanitary and shaping pruning is carried out annually. Remove branches older than 8 years, leaving 2-3 good shoots for rejuvenation. In total, there should be 10-12 branches of different ages per plant. This scheme is acceptable only for tree varieties. Remove lateral shoots from columnar ones, the shrub must be thinned out. Root growth of modern varieties does not create serious problems, but it must be removed as it appears.
