Gardeners with many years of experience mostly use the methods of sowing and planting that their grandmothers used. And this is the main mistake, because agricultural technologies do not stand still and gardeners (even experienced ones) also need to learn new things.

The classic way to check the germination of purchased seeds is no longer entirely relevant in our time, and in this article you will find out why.

5 Important Facts About Seeds Many Firms Dry Seeds

To increase the shelf life, some firms resort to drying the seeds, after which some physical biological processes in the embryo are suspended.

Therefore, there is no need to worry if the seedlings do not sprout for a long time. In order for such seeds to sprout safely, patience and compliance with the conditions of agricultural technology are needed.

Seeds are polished

Some summer residents do not hesitate to throw away small tomato seeds without lint and dark color — and this is their big mistake. Although some time ago discarding such seeds would have been the right decision, now such characteristics only indicate the quality of the processing of seeds.

Many firms use the seed polishing method to increase flowability, reduce weight, and also facilitate the sowing process.

The seeds are then encrusted to provide protection from insects and disease.

Important! Encrusted seeds should not be soaked in water, as it can wash away the layer from the pesticide-treated seeds. Subsequently, the seed will again become defenseless against insects and diseases.  Only untreated seeds are soaked

If you want to destroy phytopathogenic microflora from the surface of seeds yourself, you should be careful.

For this procedure, use a solution of potassium permanganate. Since dry seeds will very quickly absorb a dose of potassium permanganate, which can be harmful, use wet seeds.

At least 24 hours before soaking in the solution, soak the seeds in clean water. After such soaking, the seeds can be soaked in potassium permanganate for 10-20 minutes. The thing is that swollen seeds absorb the solution with less intensity, which contributes to better surface treatment of the planting material. Excess solution can be washed off with clean water.

Seeds are soaked for no more than 24 hours

When soaking seeds before sowing, you need to ensure that they are in water for no more than 24 hours. In this case, every 5-6 hours you should change the water.

Important! When using gauze or filter paper, make sure they are constantly moist. After all, even a slight drying of the seeds can lead to their death.

Also, wash the seed in water as often as possible to avoid seed fermentation.

Seed germination can be tested with gibberellin

Some vegetable crops are characterized by low germination in the first six months, but after 1-2 years, germination increases to 90-95%. Therefore, to check the germination of seeds, you can treat them with gibberellin.

Important! Use this preparation to improve the process of seed stratification.

To prepare this solution, take 0.2-1 g of gibberellin, 2-5 ml of alcohol and 1 liter of water. Treat the seeds with it, as well as the place of stratification from sawdust, sand and filter paper.

Factors affecting seedlings

seed quality

When buying seeds, pay attention to those companies whose quality of planting material meets international standards and GOST.

Sowing period

For heat-loving crops such as eggplants, peppers and tomatoes, the optimum temperature is 25-30°C. Cold-resistant seedlings germinate well at 20-25°C.

Lighting and watering

For sowing seeds, you need to choose bright places, as well as remember about temporary watering of both seedlings and sowing in open ground.

Seeding depth

The optimal sowing depth for most vegetable crops is 0.5-0.8 cm. If you sow even 1 cm deeper, seedlings can be destroyed.

Soil mixture for seedlings

Pre-prepare the soil mixture for seedlings from sand, hardwood, humus and peat (1: 3: 1: 1). Add 100-200 g of lime and 50 Kemira-Lux to a bucket of soil.

As you can see, seed selection is a process that requires a bit of time and skill. But when to plant seeds for seedlings in Belarus? And this question worries all gardeners and gardeners! After all, everyone wants to have a lush flowering garden and a fruitful vitamin garden. Fortunately, our country has a temperate climate with mild winters, smoothly turning into warm springs. The soil is already warm by May. So, when calculating the date of sowing seeds for seedlings, we can use the universal formula.
