Repair raspberries: features and benefits of autumn planting

Remontant raspberry is a culture that enjoys well-deserved popularity among gardeners. Planting this shrub allows you to harvest a rich harvest of juicy fragrant berries twice a year. In addition, raspberries are not too capricious and do not require labor exploits in the country from dawn to dusk. However, for successful fruiting, some rules of agricultural technology must be observed, which are worth learning more about.

Why is it better to plant remontant raspberries in the fall

An important advantage of remontant raspberries is the ability to bear fruit twice: in summer and autumn. The time of harvesting the last fruits depends on the variety. Usually, late berries are harvested at the end of September-October, but, for example, «Hercules» gives a harvest before the first frost. After the end of the collection, the fertile raspberries are prepared for wintering.

Planting a crop can be done from early spring to mid-autumn. We recommend choosing the autumn months for this for the following reasons:

  • Bushes take root well, which is facilitated by not hot rainy weather.
  • Raspberries don’t take much care of.
  • Since the sap flow and vegetation of the crop are already ending at this time, the shrub is less stressed.
  • Specific planting dates depend on the area, because in some regions frosts come as early as September. You can plant or transplant raspberries as long as the weather permits, but all planting work must be completed 3 weeks before the expected frost. Some gardeners are guided by the lunar calendar when planting in order to choose the most favorable lunar cycles.

    Landing Rules

In order for the result to meet expectations, a month before planting, you need to prepare the site. It should be well lit (remontant varieties love sunlight), and also protected from drafts and moisture stagnation.

The soil for these types of raspberries is better to choose neutral. To determine the level of acidity, you can see if horsetail or plantain grows nearby: they love acidic soil. To reduce acidity, it is advisable to pour slaked lime, chalk or dolomite flour.

Raspberries can be planted in several ways:

  • Root offspring (the roots, with the preservation of the coma of the old earth, are transferred to a new place of “residence”).
  • Radical cuttings, which are prepared in the spring.
  • One-year-old seedlings, which must have a developed root system.
  • We sell just such raspberry seedlings in our assortment — the age is 1-1.5 years, the root system is powerful. All you need to do after receiving it is to properly plant them.

    Caring for remontant raspberries

After planting autumn raspberries, you need to fertilize it with ash containing potassium: this substance helps plants to overwinter. Nitrogen compounds are not suitable: they are usually used in the spring, when it is necessary to increase the vegetative mass. Raspberry care resumes in early spring, when the snow melts.

Life hack: in order for the raspberry to please the family with an excellent harvest, it is recommended to sow green manure plants (lupins, mustard, oats) at the place of future planting in a year. They will improve the structure of the soil and saturate it with nitrogen, if you dig up the earth in the fall, there will be good fertilizer.

Remontant raspberries are worthy of taking a place on the plot. The fruits of the shrub have an amazing taste, and they have no equal in the treatment of colds. It is enough to make a little effort — and the efforts will be rewarded with an excellent harvest.
