Kalina: botanical reference

About 160 varieties of viburnum are known, among which there are edible and decorative species. The plant belongs to the Adox family.

Viburnum can be found in nature in the temperate climate zone, while the plants grow well in the shade and in the sun.

Among the variety of viburnum there are deciduous and evergreen plants. A special charm of decorative and edible varieties is the corymbose inflorescences that appear on the bushes in early summer. The color of the petals varies from pure white to pink shades.

Varieties of viburnum decorative

Among the decorative types of viburnum, there are tall and short varieties, the height of which varies from 3 m to 80 cm. The use of plants in the garden landscape is to create an accent, mono-composition, hedges, borders.

Kalina Buldenezh

This type of viburnum is best known to gardeners as a representative of the common viburnum. Spectacular globular inflorescences at the beginning of flowering are light green in color, then the balls become snow-white, at the end of flowering the petals turn slightly pink. Flowering viburnum Buldenezh begins in the early days of summer. Tall sprawling bushes with bright green leaves effectively set off lacy white-green flowering balls — very bright and elegant. Flowering lasts less than a month, about 20-25 days.

This plant does not produce berries, but in autumn it attracts attention due to its bright foliage. By autumn, tall bushes change the color of the leaves from green to bright yellow or crimson.

The height of the bushes varies from 2.5 to 3.0 m.

Viburnum folded

The original plant does not exceed 3 m in height. The name reflects the form of plant growth — in folds or steps. In the first years of cultivation, the shrub gives small increments, an adult plant develops rapidly, stretching up and in breadth. The species tolerates frosts well, but is not very common in the European part of the mainland. The flowers are collected in corymbose inflorescences with a flat top, painted white.

Kalina Karlsa

A small heat-loving shrub up to 1.5 m high. The crown is rounded, composed of vertically ascending branches. It occurs naturally in Korea. The leaves are ovoid or oval, wide, pointed at the ends. The entire area of the leaf blade is covered with a fleecy coating.

The flowers are collected in small rounded inflorescences with a diameter of no more than 7 cm. Outside, the color of the flowers is pink, inside — the petals are painted white.

The start of flowering is from April to May. Flowering is accompanied by a pleasant aroma.

After flowering, elongated berries are tied, which turn dark blue when ripe.

The plant does not tolerate cold wintering — shelter is required, but is very resistant to infection by fungi. Can be grown in full sun or light shade.

Viburnum wrinkled

Large shrub (up to 3 m) with a spreading crown, highly resistant to frost, does not require shelter in winter.

The leaves are elliptical, wrinkled, shiny, dark green. The length of the leaf blade can reach up to 20 cm.

The flowers are small, collected in an inflorescence-shield, have a gray color, after flowering, many berries form on the shoots, first painted red, then they darken. The formation of buds on the bushes begins in the fall, the flowering period is May.

Viburnum forked

Spectacular tall plant (height up to 4 m) with large rounded leaves of bright green color. The length of the sheet approaches 30 cm. The blade is covered with small teeth along the edge. This plant is spectacular in autumn, when the green leaves change color to purplish crimson. The flowers are white, collected in corymbs; in autumn, small berries form in place of the flowers. The flowering period is May, sometimes the viburnum remains decorative in June.

The branches are directed vertically upwards, the bark is reddish or yellow-green.

The species is not adapted to growing in hot climates.

Planting and caring for decorative viburnum

Decorative varieties of viburnum can be planted in open ground in spring and autumn. For growing viburnum, areas located in the sun or in partial shade are suitable, but the soil requirements are more serious.

For the successful cultivation of decorative viburnum, you need to select a site with fertile, loose soil with an acidity of 5.5. The culture prefers slightly acidic soils with good absorbency.

Important! It is not recommended to plant viburnum in areas with poor, rocky, saline or too wet soil.

Seedlings are planted in pre-prepared pits or trenches, the depth of which varies from 40 to 50 cm. In areas with sandy soil, the depth of the pits is 70 cm. The width of the trench or pit is 50 cm.

To fill the pits when planting viburnum, you can prepare a fresh substrate. The root neck is buried 5-6 cm below the soil level.

After planting viburnum seedlings, it is necessary to mulch the soil surface in the near-stem circle and water the plant.

Important! When planting plants in one row, it is important to maintain a distance of at least 1.5 m between them.

To care for planted young viburnums, special knowledge is not required, it is enough to regularly water the plants, remove weeds from the near-trunk circle, and carry out timely top dressing. Particular attention should be paid to pruning viburnum bushes.

Pruning of decorative viburnum can be carried out in spring, summer and autumn, while in autumn (after leaf fall) only diseased or broken branches are removed.

In the spring, you can perform a formative pruning of the bush, but this should be done before the start of sap flow. All frosted parts are also removed in early spring.

In the summer, cardinal thinning of the bushes is carried out, incorrectly growing branches, tops and root shoots are removed. All work on pruning bushes is carried out only with a clean, sharp tool.
