Planting and caring for clematis in the fall in the open field

Clematis come in different types and varieties, the flowers can be miniature and large, the height of the plants also differs significantly. Despite the fact that this plant is considered to be a liana, it is classified as a shrub.

All deciduous crops tolerate autumn planting well. At this time, they are not active, but they are able to take root well if everything is done correctly and the deadlines are observed. It will take 2-4 weeks to grow new roots. That is why planting and transplanting clematis in the fall is carried out no later than 3 weeks before the onset of cold weather.

Clematis: outdoor care

In autumn, clematis need special care. Liana ceases to bloom, the leaves fall off. For different groups, pruning is significantly different. There are low plants whose shoots do not hibernate, there are those in which flowers form on the shoots of the previous year. The rules of shelter for the winter depend on this, but not the preparation for wintering. Wintering vines are removed from the support, rolled into a ring and laid on the ground. Dry leaves, peat, sawdust, moss or straw are used as shelter. Top covered with a sheet of slate or roofing material. Clematis varieties that are completely cut off are enough to spud. If there is a risk of little snowy winters, the shelter is good.

Before winter, all clematis bushes need to be fed, but only organic fertilizers can be used. Compost, peat or humus is good. Before applying, remove the old, not rotted mulch. Pest larvae, spores of pathogens can remain in it for the winter. Therefore, it is better to burn it, it is not necessary to send it to the compost heap. For one plant you will need 1-2 buckets of organic matter. A layer about 5 cm thick is applied to completely cleaned soil. This is both protection from frost, and top dressing and a way to feed beneficial soil bacteria, which means improving soil structure.

Autumn watering has its own characteristics. The lower the air temperature, the less often watering and less water is required for clematis. After leaf fall, at least. At this time, maintain a small humidity so that the soil does not dry out.

Planting clematis in open ground in autumn

Clematis are planted in spring or autumn. Dates depend on climatic conditions, but September is best. There is no need to hurry, if planted earlier, the shoots will begin to grow, which can lead to the death of the plant, since they do not have time to mature and become woody. But it’s also not worth postponing, otherwise the bush will not take root, which means it will not survive the winter.

For planting or transplanting clematis to another place, you need to choose a good site. It must meet the following requirements:

  • Moderate lighting with protection from the midday sun.
  • No water flowing from the roof.
  • No spring flood.
  • At a sufficient distance from metal fences and stone walls.
  • With a depth of groundwater over 1.2 meters.
  • Clematis grows in one place up to 30 years, so the place is carefully selected. If groundwater is closer, the vine is planted on a mound and a thick layer of drainage is made.

The standard landing pit has a size of 50x50x50. It can be increased on poor soils, heavy clay and calcareous soils. On fertile loam, it is enough to add 5 kg of humus, peat and 350 grams of complex mineral fertilizer and 300 grams of wood ash to the excavated soil. For areas with poor soil, a complete soil replacement is relevant. To do this, mix equal volumes of leafy or soddy soil, peat, humus and add a bucket of coarse sand. The soil is nutritious, moisture-intensive and loose. Complex fertilizer and ash will help to make a completely balanced soil.

Seedlings with a closed root system are simply removed from the container and immersed in a recess in the center of the pit, carefully covered with soil on the sides and watered well.

Seedlings with an open root system are inspected, cut off damaged roots, cut off too long by a third. In the center of the pit, on top of the drainage layer, a hill is made of nutrient soil, a seedling is placed on top of it, and the roots are straightened to the sides. It remains to fill the hole with soil and water.

Not only the root neck, but also the lower 2 buds should be covered with earth. So the plant will better endure the first winter.

    Transplantation of adult clematis

Transplanting clematis to another place is undesirable, but sometimes such a need arises. The reason may be the planned construction, a change in the illumination of the site on the site, flooding, division of the old bush, or a disease of the plant itself. To prevent the recurrence of diseases, the landing pit is spilled with a solution of the drug Trichoflora 5 grams per bucket of water.

The plant is dug to a depth of 2 bayonets of a shovel at a distance of 30-35 cm from the shoots. Then they take it out along with a clod of earth. If clematis does not need to be divided, it is carefully moved to a new place, immersed in a planting hole. All cavities around the earth coma are covered with nutrient soil and watered well. For 1 plant up to 30 liters of water.

If the bush has been infected or is planned to be divided into parts, you need to gently shake off the soil, if necessary, even wash the roots in a solution of anti-disease drugs. To divide the rhizome into parts, you can use an ordinary pruner, hacksaw or hatchet. Each division should have at least 3-4 healthy roots and 2-3 shoots. The rules for planting such plants do not differ from planting seedlings with an open root system. They are engaged in transplanting clematis in cloudy weather, when plants take root better and it is easier for them to endure stress.

Clematis in the first year after planting — care

If the soil has been prepared well, all nutrients have been added, clematis does not need to be fed in the first year. Be sure to constantly monitor soil moisture. Even short-term drying can greatly harm, even destroy the plant. Water in dry, especially in hot weather, you need often, but moderately. Light protection from frost and sunlight in early spring will help the vine gain strength. If the leaves seem faded, foliar top dressing with complex microfertilizer can be carried out.

Support is very important. Cultivation of clematis in ground cover form is possible only in dry climates. To fix the shoots, an arch, stretched mesh, trellises are suitable.
