In order for rose bushes to bloom willingly, luxuriantly and brightly in summer, you need to provide the queens of the garden with proper care and comfortable winter sleep. To properly prepare roses for winter, 13 important and very simple steps will help you.

1. Proper feeding

By the end of August, stop applying nitrogen fertilizers — they contribute to the growth of green mass, which prevents roses from going dormant. With the onset of cold weather, switch to phosphorus-potassium fertilizers, which strengthen the root system and increase the overall vitality of the bush. The rose will stop producing young shoots (burgundy red) and strengthen the mature ones (green), which are the key to a successful wintering.

2. Watering mode

To introduce roses into a dormant phase, reduce watering closer to autumn, and stop by the beginning of cold weather. Generous watering is needed only in summer, during the active growing season.

3. Pinching the tips of the shoots

To stop the development of young shoots, pinch the apical shoots. The best time to do this is in September.

4. Loosening the soil

Loosening the near-stem circle contributes to the awakening of dormant buds. This is an important stage of summer care, dangerous for roses before the onset of cold weather. Do not let the kidneys wake up before frost.

5. How to prune roses for the winter

As soon as the September frosts approach, cut off all flower stalks, as well as immature, weak and growing shoots growing inside the crown. In November, remove all foliage from the branches — this will avoid the development of fungal infections and putrefactive damage to the branches.

6. Antifungal prophylaxis

Treat the bushes with a fungicide at the concentration indicated on the package. Or, prepare a 3% solution of ferrous sulfate yourself at the rate of 300 grams per bucket of water.

7. Hilling

In winter, the grafting point should be below ground level. If it is located higher, add peat soil. Important: if frosts alternate with thaws in your area, the grafting site may rot. You can spud only those bushes that grow away from the flow of melt water.

8. Wintering climbing roses

Even if you do not cover climbing roses for the winter, under the snow they will still survive the winter better than on supports. Do not lay the whips on bare ground — make a substrate from boards or thick foam. Bend down gradually, with an interval of several days — so as not to break. Each time, fix everything lower and lower until the lashes take a horizontal position. Before the onset of frost, insulate with breathable non-woven material. The rest will be done by a fluffy layer of snow.

9. How to cover roses for the winter

Don’t rush to hide. Roses are able to withstand frosts down to -10°C. If you insulate the bushes ahead of time, they will begin to warm up. The optimal time for warming roses in the southern regions of Belarus is the end of November-beginning of December, in the northern regions — mid-November.

10. Make a frame

Install frame arcs over rose bushes and cover with insulation. The more air gap between the bushes and the «tent», the better.

11. Choose insulation

The best covering material for roses is spunbond, lutrasil, agrotex with a width of at least 0.5 meters. You can replace the fabric with spruce branches. To avoid the development of putrefactive processes, leaf litter can only be thrown over the covering material. For an outer waterproof layer, use roofing material or linoleum. The film is not an option: it flies off at the slightest gust of wind and, moreover, does not breathe.

12. Snow is the best helper

Rake as much snow as possible from paths, row spacings and wasteland areas and throw bushes at them. The snow coat is the warmest.

13. Ventilation is an important part of wintering

With the onset of spring thaw, air the bushes as often as possible. Do this regularly and in the spring, when the temperature stops dropping to minus 10°C.
Prepare roses for wintering step by step, and then they are not afraid of any frost!
