How to get rid of the whitefly: chemistry and folk methods

To fully enjoy the healthy and beautiful plants of your own garden, you need to make a lot of efforts to protect them from diseases and, of course, pests. One of the most dangerous insects for green spaces is the whitefly (aleurodida). This pest is a serious threat to fruit, vegetable crops, as well as flowers and trees. This article is devoted to the means of combating the whitefly.

What does a whitefly look like

The whitefly is a butterfly, a small flying insect. Its average size is:

  •  for a female — 1-2 mm;

  •  for the male — 3mm.

Its elongated body is light green in color, and its wings are white. The diet includes vegetable juice, but the main danger is the ability of this insect to be a carrier of fungi, viruses and bacteria that are dangerous to plants.

The reproduction of the pest can be called rapid. At intervals of several days, these harmful butterflies lay their eggs on the underside of the foliage. One individual is able to lay three hundred eggs per season.

How does infection manifest itself?

Timely detection of a pest is already half the battle. It is important to find the whitefly in time, until its destructive activity has gained momentum.

Signs of a whitefly:

  • the growth and development of the plant slowed down, and the leaves began to turn yellow and curl up into a tube.

  • the leaves are covered with whitish spots that darken over time — signs of a fungal infection that often accompanies the vital activity of an insect;

  •  the back side of the leaf plate becomes sticky;

  •  the inside of the leaf may be covered with the remains of white cocoons or eggs.

If these signs are present on neighboring plants, you can check for pests on others by lightly tapping their leaves with a pencil. Insects can immediately fall from the leaves, which are easily distinguishable on the surface of the soil. If this happened in your case, you need to immediately begin the fight against the whitefly.

Whitefly entry routes

You can find the whitefly on flowers and seedlings not only in open ground. It easily penetrates into the greenhouse, and even into the apartment, using for this:

  • Priming. The eggs of this butterfly can infect the soil. In greenhouse or room conditions, they will quickly become larvae, and later, whiteflies.

  • Window. Even a protective net is not a sufficient obstacle for an adult to enter the premises.

  • Branches. Sharing a shoot of an interesting plant is a common thing for flower growers, for example. An infected process can be bought or even received as a gift.

The whitefly may not immediately declare its existence. Egg laying sometimes waits for a long time for optimal conditions for further development. Therefore, the source of infection is so difficult to find.

Whitefly Control Methods

The struggle for the health of plants with the whitefly is ongoing and in all directions. It is important to try different methods and find the most effective in your specific conditions.

How to get rid of whiteflies with Velcro

If you see flypaper in the hardware store, know that it can be successfully used as a trap and against pest barrels.

You can make a similar trap with your own hands. To do this, cardboard of bright colors is cut into strips and covered with entomological glue, which does not dry out, but retains its stickiness. Traps hung in places where insects accumulate can even be illuminated.

Indoor fumigators

The device of the fumigator is well known to everyone who resorts to its help to fight mosquitoes. A special impregnated plate or a bottle of liquid insecticide is charged into the plastic structure. The fumigator works from a network or by means of batteries.

When using this device, you need to remember safety precautions and leave the room while it is being processed.

The most effective whitefly remedies

Currently, there are enough drugs that will help summer residents defeat the winged pest. We present you the most effective chemicals and a brief description of their application:

  • Teppec. The chemical is designed to kill aphids and whiteflies. To treat 10 m2 of surface, apply a solution of 1 g of the drug in 6 liters of water. The result will be noticeable after half an hour;

  • Aktara. This long-acting insecticide is dissolved in water (3 liters — 1.4 grams) in order to water the plants with the resulting solution.

  • Fufanon. For irrigation with an aqueous solution of this product, a sprayer is used: for flowers and vegetables — 1 ml of the drug per 1 liter of water.

  • Alatar. Processing by Alatar is carried out in dry and calm weather. For trees, the solution is prepared from 5 mg per 10 liters of water, for other plants — 5 mg per 4 liters.

  • Upload. You need to work with the drug in glasses, gloves and a respirator. The solution is prepared at the rate of 10 grams per 1 bucket of water. It is used in greenhouses and for processing fruit trees.

  • Fitoverm. Leaf plates and stems of indoor plants are wiped with an aqueous solution of 2 ml per 0.5 l. For vegetables, 0.5 ml per 1 liter is enough, for trees — 1 ml per 1 liter.

  • Biotlin. Bushes and trees are treated with an aqueous solution of 3 ml per bucket, and for vegetables, the dose should be increased to 5 ml.

All of these chemicals are hazardous to human health and pets in one way or another. Therefore, the treatment must be carried out in protective equipment and, preferably, not in residential areas.

Folk remedies against whiteflies

We call folk preparations created with the help of ingenuity and many years of studying the interaction of different substances in nature. These solutions, infusions and decoctions are not so toxic, but also effective.

  • Soap solution. Grinded tar soap (1 piece) is mixed with 6 liters of warm water until a homogeneous solution is obtained. Processing is carried out using a sprayer.

  • Garlic infusion. A liter of warm water pour 3-4 large cloves of chopped garlic. After 24 hours, the filtered solution can be sprayed on the plants.

  • Infusion of dandelion or yarrow. To prepare the infusion, 100 grams of dandelion is crushed, poured with 1 liter of water and placed for 3 days in a dark and cool place. Strained infusion can be strained and used. Dandelion can be replaced with yarrow.
