High beds-boxes will transform your garden: make it neat, attractive and extremely easy to care for. These facilities allow the optimal use of every piece of land, even if it seems at first glance unsuitable for growing plants.

Frames can be placed on slopes, compensating for the difference in height, on rocky and swampy areas, on virgin, saline or spoiled by construction debris soils. Frames raised above the ground make it easier to care for vegetables and flower beds: you do not have to bend down, kneel to remove weeds or loosen the soil. Planting will not harm pets and children. In high beds, you can create an ideal microclimate and provide vegetables, berries and flowers with the most suitable soil.

What do you need to make high beds?

Frames for high beds are made from a variety of improvised materials: it all depends on your imagination, building skills and landscape features of the infield.

The beds can be of different shapes — from a simple rectangle to an ornate oval.

The dimensions common to all structures are: width about 90 cm (for the convenience of caring for plants), height — from 30 to 80 cm (depending on the landscape and the growth of the summer resident). The length of the beds can be any.

Let’s dwell on the most popular types and decide what you need to create them:

  • wooden boxes are made from waste lumber, substandard wood, slab, lining, timber. You will also need a non-toxic wood rot treatment, a screwdriver with a set of self-tapping screws, a saw or a jigsaw. Some designs will require metal corners. Wooden high beds are most often used for growing strawberries, and freshly cut grass from a lawn mower container or ordinary straw is used as mulch throughout the summer. After all, strawberry — this is how strawberries sound in English — is nothing more than “straw year”.
  • The advantages of high beds made of slate are obvious: the roofing material is very durable, not subject to corrosion and decay processes. Even in contact with organic matter, it retains its properties. You will need a grinder to cut the plates and give them the desired shape, metal pegs and corners to strengthen the structure. The finished frame can be painted if desired. Cucumbers or zucchini grow well on slate beds — they do not form a powerful root system that bursts the box.
  • metal frames are strong, reliable, lightweight, environmentally friendly, easy to assemble and disassemble. Currently, a large number of various metal structures for high beds are being sold (including those with beautiful polymer colors). It remains only to assemble them according to the instructions. if you decide to make metal fences from improvised materials, then you will need a wooden beam for the frame of the product, metal plates, for example, thick corrugated board, special anti-corrosion agents. On such high beds it is convenient to grow cabbage, tomatoes or peppers. All these crops require warm soil and light agrofiber shelter: spunbond cabbage will protect against all types of pests, and capricious nightshade ones from temperature extremes.
  • wicker wicker structures look advantageous in garden plots decorated in a natural rustic style. In fact, the sides of a high bed are an ordinary wattle fence. You will need willow or vine branches, branches of any other trees that can be bent, wooden pegs, a pruner, an ax and a shovel. Weaving skills are also required, but they can be easily mastered! On such beds, all types of salads and spicy greens look beautiful. By the way, nasturtium will become a chic decoration of such beds, which will decorate the garden and scare away almost all pests.
  • for beds made of glass or plastic bottles, naturally, a large amount of source material will be required. For special picturesqueness, it is better to use multi-colored containers. For stability of the structure, it is better to fill the bottles with sand and place them as close to each other as possible. Plastic vessels can be fastened with adhesive tape, and glass — with cement mortar.
  • brick fences cannot be moved — this is a stationary structure. Therefore, when deciding to do masonry, be especially careful when choosing a place. The bed is a brick wall, which is either placed on a concrete strip foundation, or goes several rows deep. You will need cement, sand, water, formwork boards, wire at least 2 mm thick to reinforce the structure.
  • stone high beds are durable, do not require treatment with protective agents, fit well into any landscape design. For the manufacture of structures, you can use any material: sandstone, limestone, granite, basalt, pebbles. For the construction of a stone wall, you will need (in addition to the main material) sand, coarse gravel, roofing material or polyethylene (placed on the bottom of the trench), concrete mortar for the foundation, cement mortar, sealant. Such structures will become a safe haven for any ornamental shrubs.
  • plastic bumpers are very popular with summer residents. The stores offer a huge selection of such fences for beds: tapes, labyrinths, constructors, nets. All of them perfectly retain moisture inside the structure, so that when watering the beds, soil erosion and leakage do not occur. The sides are durable, strong, easy to assemble and disassemble, they can be used to create many configurations of garden beds and flower beds.

Pay attention! Any of the listed high beds, if necessary, easily turns into a greenhouse. To do this, arcs are attached to the structure and the film is stretched.
