Everything you wanted to know about growing mulberries

Features of the mulberry tree

The mulberry tree does not need the efforts of humans or insects for pollination — mulberries are tied after light gusts of wind that carry light pollen.

At the beginning of life, mulberry trees are characterized by rapid growth, over the years, growth becomes less. In the garden, mulberry is formed by pruning, restraining growth at the level of 2-4 meters. Curly trees formed from red or white mulberry look spectacular, which serve as a decoration for the garden landscape and are used to decorate hedges.

Mulberry is unpretentious, puts up with a slight salinity of the soil, but does not tolerate cold winters. For cultivation in problem areas, it is necessary to select varieties with high winter hardiness. If the tree takes root on the site, it can grow for more than 100 years, bringing over 100 kg of mulberry annually.

Mulberry fruits are fused drupes of purple-cherry, white or pink color. In some species they are edible.

Choosing a place for a seedling

For planting a seedling of a mulberry tree, you must consider:

  • soil: drained fertile land is suitable. The distance from the roots to the aquifer is at least 1.5 m.
  • lighting: choose sunny places. You can not plant seedlings under the crown of tall mature trees that will block the sun’s rays.
  • protection from the wind: seedlings take root better when protected from the wind by the walls of garden buildings or fences. When planting, a support peg is immediately installed in the hole.

Landing dates

Mulberry seedlings can be planted outdoors in spring and autumn. When planting in the autumn, it is necessary to complete the work before the onset of frost or the season of prolonged rains. That is, in 30-40 days — this is exactly how much a young plant needs to form new roots and fully adapt to environmental conditions.

We plant mulberries correctly: five steps to success

  • When planting in the spring, the pit must be prepared in the fall. In autumn — a few weeks before planting. A layer of drainage can be laid on the bottom, autumn planting is carried out in a ready-made hole, which is dug at least two weeks before the scheduled date.
  • Speaking about the size of the planting hole, I would like to note that its dimensions are purely individual, depending on the size of the root part of the seedling. The roots should fit freely in the pit, the minimum size of the dug recess is 50×50 cm, the depth is 50 cm. The depth can be increased if it is necessary to lay a powerful layer of drainage or an earthen coma that is too large.
  • It is useful to add 5 to 7 kg of humus or decomposed compost, a pinch of potassium salt and 100 g of double granular superphosphate to the garden soil.
  • Seedlings should be placed in a dug hole, straighten the roots and immediately install a support peg. The plant is tied to it by the stem, after which the soil is laid, tamping each layer.
  • After planting the mulberry seedling, watering is carried out, pouring 2 buckets of water into the near-stem circle.

Mulberry tree care

Mulberry is an unpretentious tree. Caring for it includes activities traditional for any gardener: top dressing, pruning and spraying.

Until mid-July, the plant is watered abundantly, supplied with mineral fertilizers. Prune in spring or autumn when the mulberry is dormant. The crown is formed so that its height is 2-4 m. All dry, damaged and excess shoots are removed.

The fight against diseases and insects is carried out with the help of fungicides and insecticides. It is important to spray not only the tree itself, but also its trunk circle.
