Full of hope, the summer resident was anxiously waiting for the appearance of seedlings. He naively believed that buying quality seeds and careful sizing was all that was required of him to produce strong seedlings. However, the dreams dissipated when the sprouts, which only yesterday delighted with the greenery of the first leaves, turned yellow and drooped. What happened? As it turned out, the cause of the troubles is diseases and pests that made a daring attack on vulnerable seedlings.

History is as old as the world. You give all your strength to the search for quality seeds and methodical sowing, and often forget about the numerous angry enemies who are ready to destroy young plants overnight. To preserve the harvest, it is important to go hand in hand with faithful helpers — specialized medical preparations.

Pests you need to know!

There are many insects ready to work day and night on the destruction of seedlings. However, in the composition of the billion-strong army there are those who have distinguished themselves, who have rightfully earned the title of “particularly dangerous”. Every gardener must know what they look like in order to start extermination work on time.

whitefly

Behind the appearance of a frivolous butterfly, whose wings seem to be sprinkled with flour, a merciless pest is hiding. Nimble six-legged larvae tirelessly absorb the nutritious plant juice and rush to turn into adult insects that give offspring up to 15 times a year.

spider mite

The herbivorous arthropod clings tightly to the source of life. Thin legs, ending in sharp claws, allow you to tightly cling to the sheet. The result of the excellent appetite of the formidable baby is the appearance of bright dots on the inside of the leaf blades and a thin white cobweb enveloping them.

Aphid

Included in the largest suborder of insects that feed on plant sap. Known for its fertility. One aphid can give birth to tens of thousands of new members of the colony, who immediately set to work to destroy seedlings. Small pests are doubly dangerous, because they are carriers of phytopathogenic viruses — the causative agents of serious diseases.

thrips

These microscopic insects ruthlessly attack ornamental and vegetable crops. It is difficult to immediately notice their presence, but traces of vital activity are easy. Curvature of the stems, falling flowers, the appearance of silver spots on the leaves are obvious signs of the dominance of nasty invisible thrips.

soil flies

Do not expect anything good from the annoying midges. The white larvae of the soil fly are famous for their bloodthirstiness. Worms actively gnaw at the roots of seedlings, leaving the plant less and less likely to fully develop. If the sprouts suddenly become lethargic and pale, then unleash a war without delay.

Proven pest control weapon

When the enemy is discovered, it is impossible to hesitate. The sooner you start to act, the higher the chances of winning.

Positive feedback was received by complex action preparations that destroy larvae, worms and adult pests — Basamil, Metarizin, Aktofit, Nematofagin, Verticillin. Biological products contain fungi that produce poisons that are harmful to insects.

Fungicides based on gram-positive soil bacteria Bacillus Thuringiensis — Bactoculicide, Bitoxibacillin and Lepidocide have proven themselves well.

As an addition to the basic control measures, green (potassium) soap can be used. Natural insecticide is effective against many types of winged and wingless parasites.

How to treat diseased seedlings?

Weak seedlings are not able to resist diseases. Most often you have to deal with root rot and black leg. It is distressing that the causative agents of these and other diseases are everywhere. Infection can occur due to poor seed disinfection, injury to seedlings during picking, violation of seeding rates, excessive sowing depth and other reasons.

The need for emergency medical care is indicated by:

  • yellowing of cotyledon leaves;
  • stem thinning;
  • the appearance of spots on leaf blades;
  • death of above-ground parts of plants.

Biofungicides that have a quick effect without harm to seedlings can save sprouts from imminent death.

Preparations based on hay bacillus, which produces 70 types of substances deadly for viruses and bacteria — Gamair, Bactofit, Fitosporin, Ekomik Harvest.

Preparations based on the soil fungus Trichoderma, which is introduced into the body of the enemy and kills him from the inside, — Trichoderma Veride, Trichodermin, Gliocladin, MycoHelp.

And now you know what diseases and pests can ruin seedlings and what should be used for effective control, which means you can win. And how to select seeds in a new way, read our article.
