Diseases and pests of seedlings — get rid of correctly

Sooner or later, every gardener is faced with a situation where seedlings are affected by pests or diseases. Without urgent treatment, all spring seedlings — the key to the future harvest and luxurious flower beds — can die in a matter of days.

Plants can be attacked by sciarids, thrips, mites, whiteflies or even aphids. Irreparable damage to seedlings can be caused by infections and fungi that have fallen on seedlings from unprepared soil or through contact with diseased indoor plants. Prevention of pests and seedling diseases

The best way to avoid the invasion of pests and the spread of diseases is prevention:

  • be sure to pickle the seeds collected on your own or purchased from amateur gardeners;
  • use in seedling boxes only a sterile substrate that has not been in contact with garden soil;
  • do not sow too thickly, do not violate the recommendations for watering and temperature;
  • Remove diseased seedlings immediately and process healthy ones.

Try to sow protective plants next to vegetable crops that repel pests and partially disinfect the soil and indoor air. For this purpose, feel free to use marigolds (from fungi in the soil), chrysanthemums (from spider mites), basil, lavender, as well as mint and nasturtium (from aphids and whiteflies), thyme and sage (from cabbage pests).

Diseases affecting seedlings

  • Fusarium wilt is an ailment caused by the dangerous soil fungus Fusarium, which penetrates the plant tissues through the roots. The leaves turn yellow, turn white and wither, the top of the seedling dries up. Remove damaged seedlings from the root, and treat the remaining ones according to the instructions with biofungicides, for example, Fitosporin, Gamair and others.
  • Root rot. All types of fungi that cause damage to the roots. Remove and destroy the affected plants, and treat the soil with a biofungicide. If the seedlings are already large enough, and the apical part is still alive, try rooting it in water with a root stimulator to then return it to a sterile soil substrate.
  • Black leg (collar rot). Most often, cabbage, eggplant, peppers and petunias suffer from this ailment. The pathogen manifests itself immediately after germination — the stem darkens, necrosis (oblong spots) occurs at the root collar, small roots die off. Seed the box in which the black leg was found, water the plants with Fitolavin, Gliocladin or Maxim Dachnik.
  • Soil mold. White or gray coating on the soil surface disrupts air exchange in it, changes the mineral composition and acidity — the roots weaken, rot over time. Remove the affected foci along with the soil, and in its place add a new one mixed with quartz sand and crushed charcoal.

How to treat seedlings for diseases

To fight diseases that affect seedlings, if possible, try to use biopreparations and growth stimulants that are safe for soil microorganisms and beneficial insects. They contain spores and bacterial cells that specifically inhibit pathogens and strengthen the immunity of seedlings.

The main pests of seedlings

In the fight against garden pests, the main thing is to notice them in time, since many, for example, microscopic thrips or spider mites, can spread through seedling boxes at a hurricane speed.

During the invasion, use insecticides and complex protective equipment to control the population — Fitoverm, Bison (from whiteflies and thrips), etc.

The most environmentally friendly preparations for aphids, spider mites and many other insects are the mineral oil emulsion Preparation 30, Green soap, Neem oil.

The easiest way to get rid of dangerous black sciarid flies (mushroom mosquitoes) is to loosen the soil deeper enough to limit watering and spray every 7 days with insecticides based on natural antibiotics, for example, Fitoverm.

The fight against pests and diseases of seedlings is always a complex of measures for prevention and treatment. You can buy sterile soils, special mini-greenhouses, peat tablets, protection products and growth stimulants from us at the same time as ordering seeds — this way you will significantly save on delivery and avoid many risks when growing seedlings.
