Learn more about your site

  • Inspect the relief and shape of the site, find out in which direction the slope is, where are the natural irregularities. At higher elevations, the ground freezes faster, and, consequently, less frost-resistant crops will need insulation for the winter. If the landscape is rocky, plan an alpine hill — it is very beautiful, in addition, plants are usually unpretentious for it, they love the sun, they calmly endure drought and wind.
  • Determine where there is more direct sunlight and less drafts, and get the perfect place for a vegetable garden.
  • With the help of a surveyor or by the depth of water in a nearby well, find out the depth of groundwater. This is important when planting a garden, as many crops, primarily shrubs, trees and grasses, do not tolerate systemic waterlogging of the roots. If groundwater is too high, drainage or drainage of the site may be necessary.
  • Evaluate other features of the garden plot — the direction of winter winds, protection from drafts, the presence of corners protected from blowing. All this will come in handy when choosing plants.
  • Do a soil analysis. Knowing the composition, acidity and fertility level will help you properly replenish nutrients with fertilizers.
  • Be sure to regulate acidity when planning a garden and a flower garden in the country. Correct the acid reaction too high for the selected culture by liming or adding ash, dolomite flour. Conversely, due to its low fertility, alkaline soil should be deacidified in advance by gypsum and fertilized with organic fertilizers (humus, sawdust, green manure). Select application rates depending on the pH level according to the results obtained with a special device for measuring acidity, moisture and soil light.

Don’t keep it all in your head

It is most reasonable to plan the design of the garden plot in a sheet of paper. Draw your ideal garden and vegetable garden, taking into account the plants you want to plant. Think over the plan of beds, flower beds and mixborders, indicate their sizes. Determine the location, width and direction of paths, including paths between trees and to the main garden objects — a terrace, a gazebo, a house for inventory, a patio, a pond, a cottage gate, house doors.

Garden layout

  • The width of standard beds is 100-120 cm — it’s easier to reach their middle with your hand.
  • Arrange passages 40-50 cm wide between the beds for easy planting care. If you arrange beds at a height and along the perimeter with artificial walls, expand the paths by 20-30 cm.

  • Mixed plantings will help save space in the beds, plants in which have a beneficial effect on each other’s productivity or mutually repel pests. The most useful neighborhood is eggplant and bush beans, carrots and onions, peppers and basil, cabbage and thyme, peas and parsnips, strawberries and caraway seeds, pumpkins and corn, etc. But be careful, an unfavorable neighborhood of crops, on the contrary, inhibits their growth due to mutual competition. Always check plants for compatibility, this way you can save on plant protection products against diseases and pests.
  • Plan your mini crop rotation. It is especially dangerous to grow the same vegetable crops in the same place. And it’s not just the depletion of the soil — it’s easy to fix with fertilizers. The main reason is that the pests that have accumulated and overwintered in the plant residues of the soil carry specific pathogens.

Place flower beds and borders with ornamental shrubs, herbs and flowers so that every corner pleases the eye with bright colors all year round.

Buy a minimum of equipment for giving

It is absolutely not necessary to run after a cultivator if you decide to plant a bucket of potatoes and two dozen tomato bushes in the garden. At first, stock up on the necessary minimum — a small compact trimmer for mowing small areas of grass and weeds and a shredder of garden debris and branches, which will also be the best assistant in making compost.

Arrange a pond

A small decorative pond is still one of the main trends in garden design. Choose for him an open, slightly shaded or partial shade area, away from tall bushes and trees, in order to less often clean the water surface from fallen leaves and branches. Keep in mind that in a year or two you may want to increase the area of \u200b\u200bthe water surface, for example, to install a bridge, waterfall or fountain.

Enjoy your cottage

Do not forget to take a break from everyday gardening chores to admire what you have already managed to plant in the garden and in the garden. The fruits of your labor are worth it!
