Cabbage is an agricultural vegetable crop containing fiber, mineral salts of calcium, sulfur, phosphorus and potassium, enzymes, vitamins A, K, C, group B, and others. Before buying seeds, you should determine the crop variety, planting area, growing time, intended purpose of the future crop (for preparing summer salads, storing for the winter, canning).

When and how to sow cabbage

You can grow cabbage:

  • with a dive of seedlings, when the seeds are sown densely, then the strongest and healthiest seedlings are selected and planted in the greenhouse soil according to the 7×7 cm pattern;
  • without picking seedlings: seeds are planted in peat pots, 1-2 pcs.

Sowing seeds of cabbage of early varieties for seedlings is carried out in the first half of March, late — from April 5 to April 20 or 45-50 days before planting seedlings in the ground. It is advisable to choose the most successful days according to the lunar calendar. The soil mixture for seedlings is prepared from 1 hour of humus and sod land with the addition of 1 tbsp. l. ash per kg of mixture. You can add peat (optional). The acidity of the soil is in the range of pH 6.8-7.0.

Before planting, the seeds should be soaked in warm water (t = 50 ° C) for 20 minutes, then lowered for 5 minutes. in cold water to increase immunity, then lower for 2 minutes. in solutions with growth stimulants. Before sowing the seed material, the soil must be moistened, and the seeds should be planted to a depth of 1 cm. Then the film can be removed from the containers, the temperature can be lowered to +10 ° C until the first sheet grows.

Caring for cabbage seedlings: features

Planting cabbage in the ground is carried out according to the scheme:

  • 30×40 cm hybrid, early varieties, kohlrabi;
  • 50×60 cm mid-season;
  • 60×70 cm white, red cabbage varieties, Brussels sprouts;
  • 25×50 cm cauliflower;
  • 40×60 cm Savoy;
  • 30×50 cm broccoli.

It is not necessary to plant seedlings densely: the plant loves space, freedom, and only then gives a good harvest. The best sites are the southern and southeastern slopes of the land allotment, loams, sandy soils for early varieties, loamy soils for medium, late crops. Cabbage grows well if turnips, radishes, cereals, mustard, and radishes were previously grown in the allocated area. Before winter or in March, the introduction of manure-peat compost (10 kg per 1 m2) is allowed.

Planting, caring for cabbage in open ground

Caring for cabbage in the open field includes the main work: planting, watering, fertilizing and hilling plants. Cabbage is planted in the ground in the first half of April, if the soil temperature has risen to +8 ° С. How to plant seedlings of cabbage:

  • Make holes in the soil with a depth of 5-8 cm.
  • Place the pot in the hole, sprinkle with earth to completely cover the root system.
  • Water each plant generously with room temperature water.
  • Caring for cabbage at this stage is simple: for 7 days the seedlings are watered every 4 days, then once every 7 days in the morning / evening, the water temperature during irrigation is +18 ° C. After cutting the forks, the remaining roots and leaves are immediately removed from the plots.

    What are the optimal storage conditions for cabbage:

    • dry, dark basement/pantry;
    • cool room temperature (from +5 °С to -1 °С);
    • well ventilated area;
    • humidity level is not higher than 90-98%.

    Basement walls should be treated with a solution of slaked lime, remove populations of mold, fungal diseases.

    Storing cabbage at home: tips

    It is good to lay forks of white or red cabbage in 1-2 layers on wooden racks, paper, cardboard or hang them by the stalks on racks, crossbars, under the ceiling. If the harvest is plentiful, you can stack heads of cabbage in a checkerboard pattern with the stumps up and the height of the pyramid is not more than 1 meter.
