Our experts say that pruning grapes is a mandatory measure for caring for them. It affects not only the amount of the crop, but also the taste of the berries — it makes them sweeter, larger and more fragrant. For the formation of bushes, autumn is the best time. Covering varieties will be especially grateful, and it will be easier for you to protect them from frost.

When to cut?

Terms and technology throughout Belarus are practically the same. Proceed with the initial pruning in September, and the final pruning two to three weeks after the foliage has fallen. If you hurry and cut the vine earlier, then it will not receive valuable vitamins and minerals and will winter worse. Late pruning will cause injury to the vine, because the shoots become brittle from frost.

Initial pruning

At the first stage you need:

  • remove unnecessary green growths from each branch that have formed below the first wire (it is usually pulled half a meter from the ground);
  • on the increments of the sleeves above the first wire, emboss — cut off 10-15% of the length of the increment;
  • shorten lateral shoots on growths to 2-3 leaves.

Final pruning in October

Upon completion of leaf fall, it is necessary to form a fruit link (fruit arrow + replacement knot). First, cut off frost-resistant varieties — Triumph, Amur white, Maxi white. «Delicate» varieties (Transformation, Souvenir) leave in the end.

  • at a height of up to 80 cm, select a pair of developed lashes. It is desirable that the lower one be on the outside of the sleeve, which grows at an angle;
  • cut the lash — this is the future replacement knot, leave no more than a couple of eyes;
  • the next whip, which grows higher and on the opposite side of the replacement knot, will be the fruit arrow. How many eyes to leave on it depends on the diameter of the branch (five eyes per 5 mm, 7-8 eyes per 7 mm, 11-13 per 10 mm, 13-15 per 12 mm).

Attention! If brushes weighing more than half a kilogram ripen on your vine, then leave fewer eyes (13 pieces per 12 mm in diameter). If the mass of the brush is less than 0.5 kg, then leave more eyes (15 eyes per 12 mm).

creeper shelter

If snow does not fall every year in your area, then covering the grapes is a must. Before that, it must be treated for diseases and cut off, as mentioned above. Grape preparation is carried out from late October to mid-November. Do not worry if at this time the temperature drops even to -7-8 ° C — such hardening will only benefit the vine.

Shelter of young grapes

If in winter the temperature does not drop below -15 ° C, then the young vine can simply be covered with earth, and in case of severe frosts, additionally covered with a wooden box covered with roofing felt.

Winter protection of an adult vine

The technology of sheltering bushes older than 4-5 years is different:

  • remove the grapes from the supports and lay the whips on the ground;
  • cover the culture from above with spruce branches;
  • install arcs above the grapes at a distance of 70 cm from each other;
  • stretch polyethylene or non-woven material over them, and press down its edges with earth, bricks or stones;
  • if you pulled a film over the arcs, then leave the entrance and exit from the tunnel open so that the bushes are ventilated, hardened and their unripe shoots ripen. Close the ventilation openings only if the temperature drops below -15°C.

When growing cold-resistant varieties (Amethyst, Yubileiny, Timur), and even if winter indulges you with snowfalls and not too low temperatures, you won’t have to cover the grapes.
